History of the bsu lgbtq+ society
(WIP)
There may be innacurate information on this page as we do not have a complete history...
So far we have 1995 - 2024 documented
1995 - 1999
Content warning - Phrases which aren't acceptable in society today were used during this period of the society history as they were more widely acceptable and used during this era. Some links in this section may include these.
The Brighton Student Union (BSU) LGBTQ+ Society (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer + more) society was founded at some point before 29 may 1995 (as we've attended the 1995 Brighton Pride), as the earliest piece of information we have is about the Brighton Pride in 1995.By 25th June 1996, we had our first society website, back when we were known as the 'LGB Society'. This website would contain information about local resources, getting a society membership, and detail restrictions on mature students and external event guests, saying we'd be unable to host them (at the time). This would be allegedly created before the Brighton Student Union (known as the University of Brighton Student Union (UBSU)).
2000 - 2009
By 2002, the Brighton Student Union had a new website, and the 'LGB Society' has renamed to the 'LGBT society', and was on the union's website by 31 May 2002. We also still retained our website at a new url, and design at the old student website area.By November 2005, the society renamed to 'LGBrighTon', a semi play-on-words on the LGBT acronym commonly used then. They had also used phpbb on the website, and used the forums to announce events and society updates. In 2007, the website had moved away from using a forums-based system, and moved towards a new url lgbrighton.net. This website would remain until Summer 2009, when it would all be condensed onto Facebook, and the brighton su would rebrand to it's current name, and move to it's current URL.
2010 - 2019
In 2013, we were still called 'LGBRIGHTON', and had 16 committee roles - and would begin using only the Brighton SU website. By 2016, there were two listings for an LGBT+ society, both 'LGBRIGHTON' amd 'LGBT+', however both were identical, with one having no space - and the other having a space in it's title. It was clear the society was in the process of being renamed in July 2016, or the previous society had transferred to a new system. It is this webpage's belief that they were the same society, as both had the same committee listed.
2020 - 2024
By 2020, the society had adopted it's current 'LGBTQ+ Society' name, however was hosting most of it's events remotely via Zoom due to COVID-19. By 2022, the society had a slight variation on it's current logo, which would later be ammended in 2024 to match the Progress Pride Flag.

You are perfectly welcome at our events, however bear in mind that the Brighton Students Union does not cover insurance for any external guests.
When are your society events/meets?
Our society events & meetups are generally advertised on our social media platforms, and on the BSU website. We normally host events on Tuesdays between 18:00 and 20:30 in Elm house 404 normally, but our location can change from time to time, so we recommend checking the society page on the BSU Website, and our social media platforms.
I do not identify with anything in the lgbtq+ spectrum. Can I still attend your events?
So long as you are respectful of any society members and attendees, thier preferred names, pronouns, and thier sexuality - then you're perfectly welcome to our events!
